Shameless, Shameless Plug

I wholeheartedly agree that mindfulness is a great method for coping with ADT. I can't honestly say that I know much about meditation and mindfulness, as I've never fully follwed through on my curiosity. However, I've never forgotten the stress-relief techniques that I learned as a mere 5th grader (I was a participant in someone's master's or doctoral thesis study, I think it was; there were three groups - a control group that pretty much did nothing, another group that got to play games with the researcher, and the group I was in, which got to learn breathing and visualization techniques for helping stress. We each got what he called a "stress pillow" - which we used while lying on the floor of the grade school library, visualizing calming places and concentrating on breathing "from our belly" instead of from our chest), which have always been helpful to me as I've gotten older.

I also agree with the suggestions that people need to unplug from their wired (or disengage from wireless) environments and simply take time to relax, to think, to be with friends and family, to regroup. One of my favorite ways of doing this is to spend time in a place where we spent summers growing up, in Cushing, Maine. For me, there is absolutely no place else that has such a calming effect on me, where I can go and all seems right with the world, there are no stressors, and life is just absolutely good. It's been in the family for decades, is where my husband and I got married and spent our honeymoon, and is where I'd love to spend every June-September, if I could. I feel very fortunate to have a place like this in my life, where I can go to destress and feel so connected (in a totally non-geeky, non-technical way).

And here's where that shameless plug comes in: there's a cottage there that's available for rent every summer. If you love the idea of spending time in a cozy, rustic cottage right on the water in the midcoast Maine area, you should check it out. You'll be 20 minutes or so from the Rockland, Maine area (which is about an hour-and-a-half north of Portland) and another 15-20 minutes past Rockland to Camden - both of which have beautiful public libraries (and if you actually do feel the need to jack in for a bit, the Rockland Public Library has free wireless access; I think the Camden library should have it by now, as well - and they have a SPECTACULAR view of the harbor. It's one of the most gorgeous library locations I've ever seen. Oh, and hey - looks like they're conducting a search [pdf] for a new director ... :) ).
